Torfaen County Swimming Launch

08 February 2008

Torfaen County Swimming Launch
The borough of Torfaen has historically produced top-class swimmers, including three times Commonwealth Games athlete Bethan Coole, and current Torfaen Swim Squad coach, Ian Rosser, also a Commonwealth Games finalist. Exciting new developments are happening within the borough, with one of the key aims being to produce the next batch of elite swimmers from Torfaen.

Torfaen County Swimming is officially launched on the 21st February at Pontypool Active Learning Centre, with a swimming skills demonstration by current members of the squad at 4.30pm, followed by a sponsored swim of "Two Times Torfaen" (approximately 30 miles). At 7pm, a presentation will be made by the coach, Gareth McNarry to invited guests, where the benefits of the project will be explained and the opportunities for all swimmers will be highlighted.

The organisation has been formed to create a development pathway for swimming in Torfaen. The four clubs in the borough, Blaenafon Barracudas, Cwmbran Otters, Pontypool Dolphins and Torfaen Swim Squad, have formed a working partnership with Swim Wales, the sport's regulatory body, and Torfaen Borough Council's Swimming Development Team, and the launch sees the fruition of two years strategic planning by all parties. The co-ordinated effort by all concerned means that there are now opportunities at all levels, for every swimmer within Torfaen, to achieve their potential within the sport, and to be fully supported along the way.
